The World Health Organization has declared an emergency on the smallpox epidemic of monkeys.
According to the source, the reason for the announcement of an international emergency was the loss of control over the smallpox situation of monkeys in some regions of Africa. Currently, several new foci of the epidemic are registered in Central Africa.
450 people died from smallpox
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at least 450 people died from smallpox. The epidemic has now spread to parts of Central and East Africa, and scientists are concerned about the rapid spread of the new version of the virus and its high mortality rate.
The disease may spread to South Asia and Europe
According to WHO head Tedros Gebreiesus, the likelihood of an epidemic spreading in Africa and beyond is “very alarming.” If the necessary measures are not taken, smallpox of monkeys may extend to South Asia and Europe.
“An international coordinated response is needed to stop this epidemic and save lives. Humanity must take this epidemic seriously, “TAG1> said Tedros Gebreiesus.
One in one hundred patients dies
It should be noted that the smallpox virus of monkeys can be transmitted at close contact, such as sexual proximity, touch of skin and airborne droplets. The virus causes flu-like symptoms as well as skin lesions. In one case, a fatal outcome can be observed in one hundred patients.
The situation in African countries
Since the beginning of the year, more than 13,700 cases of infection have been reported in DR Congo. New cases have also been reported in other African countries — Burundi, the Central African Republic, Kenya and Rwanda.
At the moment, four strains of the disease have been identified. Among them, 1b was the most contagious and deadly. To date, 140 people have died from strain 1b around the world, 87 thousand people have fallen ill.
