Kennedy Jr. has raised skepticism about mRNA vaccines,\u00a0cutting $500 million in funding\u00a0for some uses of the technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh2cpbct000b3b6qfym710z0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">But this research team found its results so promising that it is preparing a more rigorous study to see if mRNA coronavirus vaccines should be paired with cancer drugs called checkpoint inhibitors \u2014 an interim step while it designs new mRNA vaccines for use in cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh2cpbct000c3b6qgq5f5j1k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">A healthy immune system often kills cancer cells before they become a threat. But some tumors evolve to hide from immune attack.\u00a0Checkpoint inhibitors remove that cloak. It\u2019s a powerful treatment \u2013 when it works. Some people\u2019s immune cells still don\u2019t recognize the tumor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh2cpbct000d3b6q0z0vw6l4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">Messenger RNA, or mRNA, is naturally found in every cell and it contains genetic instructions for our bodies to make proteins. While best known as the\u00a0Nobel Prize-winning technology behind COVID-19 vaccines, scientists have long been trying to create personalized mRNA \u201ctreatment vaccines\u201d that train immune cells to spot unique features of a patient\u2019s tumor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh2cpbct000e3b6qvcrqmhrm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">The new research offers \u201ca very good clue\u201d that maybe an off-the-shelf approach could work, said Dr. Jeff Coller, an mRNA specialist at Johns Hopkins University who wasn\u2019t involved with the work. \u201cWhat it shows is that mRNA medicines are continuing to surprise us in how beneficial they can be to human health.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"quantum-wrapper component-slot-wrapper qtm-element openweb-convo-module\" data-component-id=\"openweb-convo-module\">\n<div id=\"openweb-convo-module\" class=\"qtm-slot-inner component-qtm\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh2cpbct000f3b6qqx2m7dp6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">Grippin and his Florida colleagues had been developing personalized mRNA cancer vaccines when they realized that even one created without a specific target appeared to spur similar immune activity against cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh2cpbct000g3b6qjf4hfwyg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">Grippin wondered if the already widely available mRNA coronavirus shots might also have some effect, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh2cpbct000h3b6qajtq56em@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">So the team analyzed records of nearly 1,000 advanced cancer patients undergoing checkpoint inhibitor treatment at MD Anderson \u2013 comparing those who happened to get a Pfizer or Moderna shot with those who didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh2cpbct000i3b6qgagydoxw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">Vaccinated lung cancer patients were nearly twice as likely to be alive three years after beginning cancer treatment as the unvaccinated patients.
