A Montreal woman who was told by health-care professionals that she was too young for breast cancer but later diagnosed with it, has died from the disease. Valerie Buchanan was 32 when she died at the end of February.<\/p>\n

\u201cI keep asking myself why anyone, but selfishly, why her?\u201d Chris Scheepers, Buchanan\u2019s husband told CTVNews.ca in a telephone interview. \u201cShe was a beautiful person. She was extremely driven, talented and positive. What really breaks me is our son won\u2019t know the truly remarkable woman she was.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout 2020, Buchanan sought answers for a lump in her chest but had said she was reassured by multiple health-care professionals in Ottawa and Montreal that it was a benign cyst without sending her for imaging to confirm.<\/p>\n

After 13 months, Buchanan eventually went to a private clinic and was diagnosed with Stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer \u2013 a biologically aggressive subtype of breast cancer. Just a few months later, she learned it was Stage 4.<\/p>\n

In the last four years, amidst multiple surgeries \u2013 breast, chest and brain, along with multiple rounds of radiation and chemotherapy \u2013 she travelled, she advanced her interior design business, got married, and had a son.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was quite a fight to just get her proper care, unfortunately. It was all just very unfortunate timing,\u201d Scheepers said. \u201cIt\u2019s just really unfortunate that it cost this beautiful person their life at 32.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scheepers and Buchanan met online nearly 20 years ago \u2013 Buchanan was living in Montreal, and Scheepers was in Ottawa.<\/p>\n

They got engaged in 2018.<\/p>\n

Scheepers says he was inspired by Buchanan\u2019s positivity, drive, passion, and creativity.<\/p>\n

For their son\u2019s first Halloween last October, Buchanan had planned a circus-themed celebration: their son would be dressed as a lion in a cage, with Scheepers as the ringmaster and Buchanan as a circus performer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember spending two hours at Home Depot alone just trying to figure out what would be the best materials for it,\u201d Scheepers said. \u201cI spent six hours putting together such a basic thing, but it all came together, and she was so happy. I would do it all over again if I had to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if it was just building something like that, she gave me so much purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rise of incidences of breast cancer in young women<\/h2>\n

Breast cancer is a prevalent health concern in Canada, ranking as the second most commonly diagnosed cancer, with an estimated 30,800 cases expected in 2024 \u2013 just behind lung cancer, which was projected to reach 32,100 cases, according to the\u00a0Canadian Cancer Society.<\/a><\/p>\n

Moreover, breast cancer is on the rise among younger women.<\/p>\n

According to a new\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0published in the Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal, between 1984 and 2019, diagnoses increased by 45.5 per cent for women in their 20s, 12.5 per cent for women in their 30s, and 9.1 per cent for women in their 40s.<\/p>\n
