Monday afternoon\u2019s instructions, though, reduced the email to irrelevancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">HuffPost obtained an email from the Social Security Administration\u2019s HR department, sent Monday afternoon, telling workers that OPM clarified its policy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-marshmallow pb-5 dark:bg-ramones md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mb-4 hidden pb-5 dark:bg-ramones md:block\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\">\n<div id=\"R148kb3dd8aqfnntkqH1\" class=\"flex\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cPursuant to updated OPM guidance, responses to the email from sender \u2018HR\u2019 dated Saturday, February 22, are voluntary. Non-responses are not considered a resignation,\u201d the email said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Spokespeople for OPM did not respond to requests for comment. The New York Times\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/02\/24\/us\/trump-musk-news?smid=url-share#ee2dd720-8d3d-5cce-9a31-2a7a9adb0938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:first reported the reversal;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"25\" data-v9y=\"1\">first reported the reversal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The email switcheroo represents\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/trump-doge-federal-workers-fired-rehired_n_67b89cb3e4b09eb937701aa4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:the latest oopsie moment;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"26\" data-v9y=\"1\">the latest oopsie moment<\/a>\u00a0for Musk\u2019s much-ballyhooed cost-cutting team, known as the \u201cDepartment of Government Efficiency.\u201d Multiple agencies have scrambled to rehire key employees who were let go as part of DOGE\u2019s mass layoffs across the federal workforce. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, said she was happy OPM made responding to the email voluntary. \u201cI don\u2019t think it was handled very well in terms of the surprise element of it or what the point of it was,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Other GOP senators have been critical of the project as a whole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIf Elon Musk truly wants to understand what federal workers accomplished over the past week, he should get to know each department and agency, and learn about the jobs he\u2019s trying to cut,\u201d Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska)\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lisamurkowski\/status\/1893772763669967012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:wrote Sunday on X;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"36\">wrote Sunday on X<\/a>, formerly Twitter. \u201cOur public workforce deserves to be treated with dignity and respect for the unheralded jobs they perform. The absurd weekend email to justify their existence wasn\u2019t it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kansas), who chairs the Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee, has quietly been urging the Department of Veterans Affairs to reinstate hundreds of employees it haphazardly fired.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-marshmallow pb-5 dark:bg-ramones md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mb-4 hidden pb-5 dark:bg-ramones md:block\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\">\n<div id=\"R15akb3dd8aqfnntkqH1\" class=\"flex\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cCertainly on the veterans side, we\u2019re asking for information from the administration,\u201d Moran\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/02\/20\/gop-lawmaker-doge-cut-panic-00205282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:told Politico;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"37\">told Politico<\/a>\u00a0late last week. \u201cWe are being reassured that no one at the VA who has any direct care responsibilities are being terminated or laid off, and we\u2019re just looking for the positions and circumstances in which it\u2019s occurring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On Saturday, Musk\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1893386883444437415\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:announced;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"38\">announced<\/a>\u00a0all federal employees would receive an email asking \u201cwhat they got done last week\u201d and that failing to respond would be \u201ctaken as a resignation.\u201d Musk said the email demand had been inspired by Trump\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114047677181856301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:encouragement for Musk to be more aggressive;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"39\">encouragement for Musk to be more aggressive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The email that went out to all 2 million federal workers from OPM said \u201creply to this email with approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished last week and cc your manager,\u201d adding that senders should not include classified information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Trump praised the Musk initiative as \u201cgenius\u201d on Monday, even as OPM reversed itself. \u201cIf you don\u2019t answer, like, you\u2019re sort of semi-fired or you\u2019re fired,\u201d Trump claimed at the White House.\u00a0\u201cBecause a lot of people are not answering because they don\u2019t even exist,\u201d Trump said, baselessly suggesting there are nonexistent people in the roles of federal employees.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-marshmallow pb-5 dark:bg-ramones md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some agencies said they didn\u2019t plan to comply with the request at all. FBI Director Kash Patel told his workforce the FBI \u201cis in charge of all of our review processes\u201d and to \u201cpause\u201d their responses. The USDA\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/samstein\/status\/1894103416118432173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:told workers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"40\">told workers<\/a>\u00a0there\u2019s no penalty for not responding. But the VA\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/va-opm-musk-email_n_67bc7bf0e4b0913285c153bf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:told workers they had to comply;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"41\">told workers they had to comply<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Department of Health and Human Services told staffers they were welcome to respond to the email, but also reminded them not to share information on specific drugs, research or experiments.\u00a0And in an email sent Monday and viewed by HuffPost, it warned them of a big potential downside of responding to Musk\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAssume that what you write will be read by malign foreign actors and tailor your response accordingly,\u201d read the email.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"rounded-lg\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/e5Q3XXaGSfInkDuj1QzujQ--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTY0MA--\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/the_huffington_post_584\/e26cab92b64e81f248d3ccc6a0888d44\" alt=\"&amp;#x00201c;I don&amp;#x002019;t think it was handled very well in terms of the surprise element of it or what the point of it was,&amp;#x00201d; said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.).\u00a0<span class=\"copyright\">Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/span><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At least one federal agency, the Department of Interior, is still making its tens of thousands of employees submit a list of their weekly accomplishments \u2014 and telling them to prepare to do this potentially every week.<\/p>\n<div class=\"max-md:faux-bleed mb-4 bg-marshmallow pb-5 dark:bg-ramones md:invisible md:mb-0 md:h-0 md:overflow-hidden md:pb-0\">\n<div class=\"py-2 text-center text-xs uppercase\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis email is legitimate, and employees (other than political appointees and those who lack access to email) are expected to respond,\u201d reads a Monday morning email to Interior Department employees from Charles Dankert, a senior adviser to Secretary Doug Burgum. \u201cGoing forward, Interior will consider incorporating an expectation that employees submit weekly accomplishment bullets into its regular weekly reporting structures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When OPM\u2019s email went out on Saturday, an Interior Department regional director initially told staff to hold off on replying to it until they got further guidance, an agency employee told HuffPost. But on Monday, the regional director told everyone to respond to it with a list of their accomplishments.
