The recovery is never smooth. You always overcorrect. Suddenly you’re intensely interested in the ceiling tiles or a plant in the corner and everyone knows exactly what just happened. The male brain has two modes: plausible deniability and getting caught.

There’s an entire genre of humor that only works because you recognize the shape of something you’re not supposed to recognize. And the funniest part is the person who posted it absolutely knows what they’re doing. Nobody is that innocent. You don’t accidentally photograph something that looks like that and caption it with a straight face. They wanted you to see it. They wanted you to screenshot it and send it to someone. The internet peaked somewhere around the time people started putting cowboy hats on things that shouldn’t have cowboy hats. It’s the lowest possible effort for the highest possible return. You take literally any object, add a tiny hat and a cigarette, and suddenly it has more personality than most people you’ve met. I don’t know why this works. I don’t want to know.
